Vertical Safety is a profit taking enterprise providing services designed to re-construct safety. These products are broadly contained in a portfolio of product lines where a product line may have multiple products. What is interesting regarding these product lines is that the products associated with each line may originate from different suppliers. Therefore, part of Vertical Safety’s mandate is to attempt an up to date visibility of products available in a defined product line, regardless of competition i.e. we will sell competition as well.
Portfolio The product lines are identified as to their function and location. Currently all locations applies to South Africa (SA), but that could change over time. The following is a short description and intent of each product line:
ManagerSA The function identified here relates to Management and specifically the setting of strategic objectives and in this case, safety objectives. Currently there are only one product available to service the need and is identified as the Safety Gap. It involves a knowledge transfer presentation which will crystallize the problem after which the CEO may decide on appropriate actions.
IntegrateSA The function identified here relates to Systems and specifically integrating Requirements levels with Execution levels. It is also part of management but attempts to rather improve the systems behind Managers. There is only one product in the product line at present and is identified as the Integration Gap. It involves a knowledge transfer presentation which will crystallize the problem after which the CEO may decide on appropriate actions.
EmpowerSA The function identified here relates to communities and specifically the safety culture. There are different parts to this product line of which the following products are applicable: Pre-school and ABET safety educational approach (Emory University) Pre-school and ABET scientific safety exposure (Siemens) Grade 6 scientific safety exposure (University of Pretoria) Community safety surveys (Narrative Lab)
There are various competitive initiatives in this product line with none that is identified wrt safety but actually is. These products require customization depending on the degree of application.
ConsumeSA This product line was identified to address the incompatibilities between 1st world equipment and 3rd world consumers. The SABS addresses this issue as well with various initiatives such the Design Institute and ISO Standards and Packaging marking. It is also addressed to some degree by the Ergonomics Institute at CSIR and The Chamber of Mines. However, not all equipment imported or even designed and manufactured in South Africa is safe and attempts will be made to identify specific areas in future. Currently there are no specific products being marketed in this product line.
UtilitySA Public services are becoming unsafe in South Africa as seen from various perspectives such as miners dying as a result of rolling electrical black-outs, contaminated water systems and uncontrolled sewerage systems. However, security services are also unsafe in the sense that 1.6 million offenders are not caught each year. These problems create an unspoken need for solutions of which two individual products were identified: Decentralized solar-powered electrical Utility. The concept is to sell 1MW generator utilities where electricity generation and water heating is integrated. This provides for an economical long term solution. Major suppliers are already active in this field. Residential electrical current management controller. The concept is already available from suppliers but would need limited customization for larger applications.
WeatherSA The environment has been reported as being a problem in all media. So it is no surprise that rooftops get blown away and aircraft gets into trouble for various reasons such as shearing wind conditions and waterlogged landing strips. There is currently a flight test center across from the OR Tambo Airport that is capable of instrumenting and telemetring suitable aircraft for measuring these extreme weather conditions. A suitable supplier of aircraft is sought in order to develop this product further. Once completed all weather conditions in SA can be characterized and we will essentially become safer.
